PODGE/P.V.A./ACRYLIC MEDIUM
An interesting colourless solution that is WATER PROOF /PERMANENT when dry, but water soluble Dress and prepare work area accordingly. Can be thinned out with wa-ter if too thick. Known also as Podgy. Some possible uses:
Turn Tempera Paint into Acrylic Paint. Try 3 part paint, 2 part podge.
Glossy final finish for clay, paper mache, etc. projects.

‘Paint’ over top of oil pastel colouring on drawings to prevent oil pastels from ‘smearing’.

Use a dipping solution' for small paper mache projects with tissue/specialty pa-pers based on bristol board projects. Soak papers in solution. Drape. Piece by piece. Scrunch up some tissue bits to create a 3-D look. Let dry. Paint on some acrylic medium for a final glossy finish. Glue on pin back, attach earring hard-ware, etc.

Cover a paper covered coffee can or a glass bottle with tissuepaper & acrylic me-dium. For a 'stained glass look' use a black thin-tip permanent marker to out-line the tissue paper colours and shapes.

PAINTING.

FIRST TIME PAINTERS can start with 2 of the primary colours (i.e. red and yellow). Use 1 paint pot and 1 paint brush for each colour. Teach how to return the brush iback into the correct paint colour pot. If there is confusion, you will end up with or-ange paint.. Gradually add new colours. The next step is the ‘water pot’ to clean off the paint before starting a new colour. Start slow and steady.

VINYL PAINTING/WORKING APRON (Tabard) Store bought painting aprons too hot? Too small? Too everything? Make your own apron from a picnic vinyl table-cloth. Measure the width of the child's shoulders & desired finished length in front & back. Fold at the shoulder line & cut out a hole/slot so it will fit over the child’s head. Ties can be cut out & pinned with safety pins at the waist. Adults like these tabards too !

PAINTING BOX to hold your paint pots! Are you painting on the kitchen table & spilling more than you are using? No problem. Turn a paper laundry soap-type box (empty) on its side. SPLATTER PAINTING ! Use a toothbrush and popsicle stick instead of a brush. Lay a series of objects - leaves, pennies, bristol board cut out shapes - on the paper. Scrap the stock over the bristles to create a shower of little paint droplets. Experi-ment with colours. Remove the objects. What happened ?

LIQUID TEMPERA PAINT is ready to use. For easier washout, add a squirt of dish soap to the paint. If paint is 'too thick', add a little water. Try putting a piece of NEWSPAPER underneath the painting paper to absorb excess water/paint.

POWDERED TEMPERA PAINT requires time to mix up. 3 part powder & 2 part wa-ter. The paint will be 'thick as water'. You will only vary the intensity of the colour NOT THE THICKNESS by adding more powder paint. Years ago a person could use Ivory Snow Soap Flakes to thicken the paint. I haven’t seen this in the stores for years. Maybe you can find something similar. But really is it worth it ? Remember, tempera paint is water soluble, but it is still colour rich. Dress accordingly. For easier washout, add a squirt of dish soap to the paint. Put a piece of newspaper under the newsprint painting paper. The newspaper will absorb any excess water and help the painting paper from ripping.

FINGER PAINTING !! Rich and creamy and ready to use ! The play value (fun) is in the DOING OF THE ACTIVITY, rather than the end result.
Prepare a play surface. Any paint colour can be wiped off ceramic tile, but the colour could be absorbed into the tile grout. Protect floor or move to another room.
Work on a low work surface covered in vinyl tablecloth/shower curtain, cookie sheet. The low height encourages the kids to stand, allowing for lots of move-ment and freedom. Wipe the play surface with a damp sponge. Lay the finger-paint paper down shiny side up. Wipe the paper down also with the sponge. Yes the fingerpaint paper is specially coated paper to provide strength and dura-bility for the act of ‘fingerpainting’ !

Spoon out the desired colour on the paper. Try starting with 1 colour, then introduce 2nd colour. Remember…the 3 primary colours (red,yellow, blue) make buckets of brown… Let the painters experiment with 2 colour combinations.

If you spoon the fingerpaint directly on to the play surface, you experiment with the concept of MONO PRINTING. A cookie sheet or serving tray make a neat and tidy play surface. Once they are happy with their creation, lay a piece of paper (construction, newsprint or whatever) over top. Gently pat down or use a rolling pin. Gently peel back the paper. Presto ! A mono print design.

COSTUME TIME ? PENTEL FABRIC PASTELS and a pillow case are the answer. The fabric pastels are rich rich soft and creamy that you use to draw directly on to fabric. The fabric content (cotton, polyester, acrylic) is not important. Heat set with iron to set the colours. Easy Tip: Secure the fabric over a piece of cardboard and clip it tight with clothespins. Easier to draw on the fabric when it is secure. Easy Tip: Try outlining your pattern with a dark colour. Heat set this outline. This should allow you to colour in and around your pattern without smudging. Continue to colour in design. Heat set to finish.
